Gonzalez’s strange spring now a weird summer

Bobby Gonzalez’s Seton Hall tenure came to an odd end. Turns out it was just a prelude to his summer.

Gonzalez was arrested Monday on suspicion of shoplifting at a New Jersey mall. Police say he took a $1,400 men’s satchel from the Polo Ralph Lauren store. If true, it’s a stunning fall for Gonzalez.

“This is a misunderstanding in a series of miscommunications,” Gonzalez’s attorney Gerry Krovatin told New Jersey.com. “Bobby had no intention of stealing anything and the bag in question never left the mall. We are going to straighten this out with all parties involved.”
Gonzalez better hope so. This is the kind of thing from which coaches rarely recover.

Then again, Gonzalez may already have too much baggage to earn another head coaching job at a BCS school. Let’s recap:

Weeks after a less-than flattering New York Times profile that painted Gonzalez as a coaching tyrant, he had words with a school official, saw his team lose in the first round of the NIT, got fired, sued the school and had recruits fail to qualify for school.

Then there was the ridiculous tirade directed toward Jeff Goodman at the NBA draft.

Man, Bobby. There are downhill spirals, and then there’s your last few months. Hard to see him getting back into coaching anytime soon.
