Arizona’s down 19 wins. Let’s move on.

The NCAA decided Arizona’s self-imposed sanctions (two years probation, a reduction of scholarships and recruiting days, among others) for recruiting violations involving former coach Lute Olson weren’t stiff enough, so it tacked on the loss of another scholarship and vacated 19 wins from the 2007-08 season.

Not to sound too flippant, but can we all move on now?

The Wildcats broke the rules and deserved their punishment. But as others have pointed out today, the vacating of wins from a given season - unless it involves a Final Four run or something similar - is a lame punishment. The record books must be changed, but given that we’re now years after the fact, who cares?

The only thing Arizona and coach Sean Miller should care about is how all of this will affect recruiting. If Mike DeCourcy’s take is correct, Miller and his staff should be able to adjust.

In 2010-11 and 2011-12, Arizona will be allowed half (six) of the usual on-campus recruiting visits (12). It’ll also have fewer evaluation days allowed to coaching staffs. That just means Miller and his assistants will have to be more efficient. From DeCourcy:

“I am very happy for our current players that today’s sanctions won’t affect their future, nor will it affect the prospects that we are currently recruiting to our great university,” coach Sean Miller said in a statement.

Which is his way of saying: We’ll be on TV, we’re eligible for postseason, and all this is over. We can handle the rest.

Miller’s focused on the future. He could care less about those 19 wins.

Same with the rest of us.
