BYU to go WAC in hoops, go alone in football?

Someone wasn’t happy with the conference realignment results. And that someone was BYU.

While the Pac-10 scooped up in-state rival Utah, the Cougars remained the Mountain West Conference (which some think BYU disdains) with their smaller TV deal and no guarantee at a BCS bowl. And now they’re thinking about going it alone.

According to a Sports By Brooks report, BYU may go the independent route in football and join the WAC for everything else, including men’s hoops. (Here’s a breakdown of why they’d do it.) It could happen as early as Friday. The latest is Sept. 1.

If it happens.

The Mountain West would crumble without BYU and Utah. They’re two of the conference’s elite athletic powers and also have a chunk of the league’s TV sets. Expect MWC officials to do their best to ensure this doesn’t happen.
