Fredette’s dad camped out for tickets to see BYU

When BYU announced it would be playing a game in Glens Falls, N.Y. this season as “thank you” to native son -- and player of the year candidate -- Jimmer Fredette, you knew it’d be huge.

Fredette set a Section II basketball record by scoring 2,404 points while at playing at Glens Falls high school and has become a sensation in three seasons with BYU. His 37-point outing against Florida in last season’s NCAA tournament propelled the Cougars into the second round for the first time since 1993.

So more than 300 fans started lining up early -- Black Friday early -- to get tickets for the Dec. 8 game against Vermont.

And Fredette’s dad was one of ‘em. From the Glens Falls Post-Star:

He brought a chair and blanket and was prepared to spend the night with the masses, waiting for the ticket windows to open on Saturday morning.

Al said getting tickets for his immediate family won’t be a problem. His son will be allotted four tickets through the school, and his BYU teammates may help out by donating some of theirs.

But he said he has friends who want to go, but couldn’t be there to wait in line. So the father of the most famous basketball player in Glens Falls, wearing a blue BYU warmup suit, killed time by chatting with fans in 40-degree weather as the stars twinkled overhead.

Can’t blame Al. Glens Falls mayor Jack Diamond expects the 6,200-seat Civic Center to be standing room only for the game.
