In a ‘cutthroat business,’ Arizona’s stocking up

Sean Miller’s stocking Arizona with prospects, the latest being prized guard Josiah Turner. Now what to do with everyone?

A recruit rundown by Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star details how the Wildcats plan to handle their 2011-12 roster when they’ll have 14 scholarship players, but only 12 scholarships to offer. (Call it a good problem to have.) Right now, Miller’s not worried. Today’s game requires planning because guys often bolt for the pros - especially when they’re elite guys.

So Miller’s essentially overstocking the program, which might sound a bit cutthroat, but Arizona officials don’t mind. Athletic director Greg Byrne is “confident” Miller can graduate players and load up on players. If a few have to transfer, so be it.

“These things have a way of working themselves out,” says Clark Francis, longtime recruiting analyst for HoopScoop, told the paper. “A lot of coaches in this day and age sign guys and figure it out later. This is a cutthroat business, and scholarships are renewable. You don’t have to renew them.”

You wanna play at Arizona? You better bring it.
