DePaul takes first step back to respectability

Maybe there’s hope for DePaul.

The Blue Demons have won one Big East game the last two seasons. They’ve finished above .500 just once since joining in 2005. The team’s facilities stink. Fan attendance is lagging. And they haven’t snagged a top-level recruit in years.

Until now.

Shane Larkin, a four-star recruit (and son of former NL MVP Barry Larkin) committed to DePaul Tuesday night, giving new coach Oliver Purnell a big first step in turning things around for DePaul. The 5-11 point guard will be a nice fit for Purnell’s up-tempo style when he arrives in the fall of 2011.

So there’s hope. But this was just the first step in what’s sure to be a long, long road for Purnell.
