Another impressive performance by Kemba Walker during a 94-61 win against Maryland-Baltimore County – he logged a triple double in the game – overshadowed the one issue the Huskies have had this season: defensive rebounding.
UConn allowed 18 offensive rebounds on Friday, 14 of which came in the first half. It was the fourth game in which foes rebounded at least 36.6 percent of their misses. As you’d guess, Jim Calhoun was none too happy about it.
“Coach was yelling at us about that,” Jeremy Lamb told Mike Anthony of the Hartford Courant. “The shortest guy on the team was rebounding.”
It’s a tale of two boards, too. Few teams hit the offensive glass better than the Huskies. They gather 42.2 percent of their misses (ninth best in D-I), but allow foes to grab 33.8 percent of their misses. More than 200 D-I teams do a better job, according to stats on kenpom.com.
Much of it would be solved if Alex Oriakhi had more than four rebounds. Calhoun will solve that. And soon.
“Alex has got to stay at home [near the basket] and do what he does really well,” Calhoun said.
