N.C. State stinks, so fans already focusing on next coach

N.C. State’s season isn’t over, but barring a miraculous finish – like winning the ACC tournament – Sidney Lowe’s tenure is. Between Saturday’s 24-point loss to Duke and C.J. Leslie’s suspension and things have gone from bad to worse for the Wolfpack in a matter of weeks.

Less than a month ago, they were 11-4 and had designs on a Top 3 ACC finish. Now they’ve lost seven of their last eight and stand 12-11 overall, 2-7 in ACC play.

Lowe’s trying to stay upbeat, but as the Raleigh News & Observer notes, every bit of optimism is now drained from the season. It’s time to move on.

So credit the guys at Backing the Pack for some forward thinking.

Back in December, they ran a post of possible coaching candidates, rating them in four categories: Big names, BCS level coaches we may have a shot at, mid-major head coaches and other. It was mostly fodder for a slow time in hoops.

No longer. Now it’s a series of posts. It’s at six right now, but will surely grow. (I love the disclaimer at the start: “As always, I make no representations about the accuracy of this post, except that I’m doing more homework than Lee Fowler did in 2006.”)

They’ve hit Richmond’s Chris Mooney, Dayton’s Brian Gregory, Providence’s Keno Davis, South Carolina’s Darrin Horn, Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall and Missouri State’s Cuonzo Martin.

Among the key questions: Does he run the Princeton offense? Do his teams play defense? Can he recruit? And ACC/state of Carolina connection?

But here are my two favorites: “Would he be better than Sid” and “Would he be better than Herb?”

Those are the two most important questions, aren’t they? Too bad they’re the two questions that will be impossible to answer.
