Reader mailbag: Big East ‘greatness,’ Steve Lavin’s success and more

The Big East is headed for 11 NCAA tournament bids. You’ll hear some pundits proclaim otherwise, but don’t believe ‘em. The conference is filled with 11 teams that already have done enough to make the Big Dance. (Marquette wrapped that up when it beat UConn on Thursday.)

Still, there’s something about the Big East that creates some doubters. Maybe it’s that the spend all season beating up on each other, which gives us the impression that they’re somehow more vulnerable than other schools in March.

Does any team other than Pitt strike you as a national title contender? Or are they simply good, not great teams.

Ken Davis answers that very question in this week’s reader mailbag, and has an answer that may surprise you.

Also in the bag, who Ken would choose to take that last-second shot, how Steve Lavin’s thrived in his first year at St. John’s, and how schools approach their coaching searches.
