Georgia Tech fires Hewitt, sets up another offseason coaching carousel

It’s another offseason of non-stop coaching hires and fires.

Georgia Tech reportedly will fire Paul Hewitt and Alcorn State got rid of Larry Smith, bringing the total of fired coaches just 12 days into March to 15. And with Sidney Lowe expected to be out at N.C. State any day now, the coaching carousel isn’t going to slow down soon.

Among the notable firings thus far include three coaches at major conference schools: Hewitt, Texas Tech’s Pat Knight and Providence’s Keno Davis. Knight and Davis were gone after just three seasons.

Hewitt’s tenure (which technically may last through the weekend) was a little longer and was filled with highs and lows.

In 11 seasons, he was 190-162 with Georgia Tech with four 20-win seasons and a spot in the 2004 national title game. He coached and recruited five NBA draft first-round picks, including Chris Bosh and Derrick Favors, which was part of the issue. Hewitt could never seem to win big despite that talent.

He’s reportedly owed $7.2 million as part of a buyout with his Georgia Tech contract.

As for his replacement, Minnesota coach Tubby Smith downplayed any notion of taking the Yellowjackets job. With an arena revamp underway and fan interest lagging, expect Tech to go after a high-profile coach.

UPDATE: Make it 16. Utah fired Jim Boylen after four years and a 69-60 record at the school.
