Every NCAA tournament bracket has upsets. Most seasons, there are at least 6 first-round tournament upsets by double-digits seeds. If that doesn’t make you think twice when looking at your bracket, nothing will.
That’s just one of the nuggets to be found in Davis Hess’ preview column, “Favorites beware – ’11 tourney is wide open.”
He’s not just pulling this stuff out of thin air, either. He spent Sunday night, Monday and Tuesday pouring over stats, projections and other analytic tools to come to the conclusion that this year’s tournament might be more wide open than ever before.
That means everyone, the 1 seeds, the 2s, 3s, 4s, are all vulnerable. That means teams like Belmont and Utah State could win games. Hey, he even gives the 15 seeds – which haven’t won a tournament game since 2001 – a 10 percent chance of beating one of the 2 seeds.
My advice? Go read his story before you run out of time to finalize your bracket.
