Jimmer’s award season is under way

Jimmer awards season has begun.

BYU senior guard Jimmer Fredette grabbed two honors Monday, snagging first-team All-America honors and being named the player of the year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (the Oscar Robertson Trophy.)

This is just the start, too. He already snagged Sporting News player of the year, and will almost certainly be named AP national player of the year on Friday. Expect the Naismith Award and Wooden Award to follow suit.

Is he worth it? Some bemoan Fredette for not playing defense, but that hasn’t been his role in BYU’s system. Coach Dave Rose values him more for his scoring and ball-handling, so Fredette’s asked to stay out of foul trouble.

If you had a scorer like Fredette, you’d do the same.

His 28.9 points per game led the nation and was the highest D-I average in nine seasons. That was bolstered by four 40-plus games and a 52-point outburst vs. New Mexico in the MWC tournament semifinals. He broke Danny Ainge’s school scoring record (2,599 points) and became the first player to surpass 1,000 points in a season since Purdue’s Glenn Robinson did it in 1994.

If that’s not enough? There’s this.

The Jimmer. Guy’s a phenomenon.
