UCLA loses Honeycutt to NBA draft, but adds Drew II

UCLA is losing one player to the NBA, but adding a transfer. Doesn’t look like an even swap, though.

Sophomore swingman Tyler Honeycutt is entering the NBA draft and plans to sign with an agent, precluding any possibility of returning to school. The 6-8 wing was the Bruins’ most tantalizing talent, averaging 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds a game, but exploded for 33 on Kansas and finished as the Pac-10’s leader in blocks.

“I’m going all out for it,” he said. “I’m pretty high right now and this year considered being a weak draft is a good reason to leave.”

He’s also not worried about an NBA lockout.

“I’m sure there’s going to be one,” he said. “No one is exactly sure how long.”

He’s ranked 41st among draftexpress.com’s Top 100 prospects.

Meanwhile, former North Carolina guard Larry Drew II enrolled at UCLA, according to BruinReportonline.com. The 6-foot guard left the Heels in midseason (they would go 17-3 without him) and won’t be eligible to play until 2012-13 season. He’s nowhere near the talent of Honeycutt.

Oddly enough, Drew is the third UNC player to transfer to UCLA in the last year. David and Travis Wear left Chapel Hill last summer for L.A.
