Prized ’12 recruit shatters backboard, still plays in game

Mitch McGary’s one of 2012’s most coveted prospects. It’s easy to see why.

Scout rates the 6-10, 245-pound post player as the top center in his class, with nods to his strength and rebounding. Those two traits are on full display in this video that’s been making the Internet rounds (thought Rush the Court posted it first, near as I can tell) from the Elite 24 showcase.

McGary needed 37 stitches for that shoulder gash. Not that it stopped him from playing. From Dave Telep’s blog:

Glass was stuck in his shoulders and arms and he didn’t flinch. They treated him and planned on taking him to the hospital but McGary wanted to stay. He didn’t go to the hospital until three hours after the original dunk, following the game itself. When I saw him at the hotel a half hour after the game he was on his way to get stitched up. He soaked up every minute of the feat and the game.

McGary’s reportedly has “strong feelings” for Duke, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan and Maryland. When he makes his choice, I’m guessing this video will be played more than a few times.
