Central Florida benches Michael Jordan’s sons for now

Michael Jordan’s sons are Central Florida’s two most famous players. But that hasn’t kept Marcus and Jeffrey from landing in coach Donnie Jones’ doghouse.

Neither Jeffrey, a senior guard, or Marcus, a junior guard and one of the team’s top players, played during Saturday’s exhibition against West Virginia Tech. Marcus was suspended for violations of team rules, while Jeffrey and starting point guard A.J. Rompza were withheld because of eligibility concerns.

Jones didn’t say how long the suspensions would last or their specific nature, though he did say Marcus and Rompza were out for separate issues.

“How long that’s to be, I’m not sure,” Jones said told the Orlando Sentinel. “That’s to be determined for both of those guys. Could be as early as next game they could be back or it could be longer.”

Some speculations revolves around news that emerged last spring involving Ken Caldwell, the man at the center of an ongoing NCAA investigation into UCF. He’s alleged to be a runner for the football and basketball teams. But Jones is leaving all those inquires to his bosses and just trying to prep for the season.

“Throughout the season there are going to be times when guys are hurt or out, and as I’ve told this team from Day 1, we’re very deep and have a lot of pieces and that showed. (The suspended players) will continue to practice each day and we’ll get better as a team,” Jones said on the team’s website.
