Video: ‘The elements will be a factor’ in Carrier Classic

The weather report usually isn’t part of a team’s pre-game preparation. But the Carrier Classic isn’t your usual game.

When No. 1 North Carolina plays Michigan State Friday night, it’ll be on the deck of the USS Vinson (the ship that buried Osama bin Laden at sea), in a Navy showcase that’s part of Veterans Day celebrations. Yes, it’s outside. Yes, that’s unusual for college hoops.

It’s also very cool, as you can see in these photos.

The downside? There’s a 20 percent chance of rain in San Diego. (They’ll play below deck if it gets really bad.)

But it’s all part of participating in an usual event like this, as Tar Heels coach Roy Williams notes in this video.

A little rain might just be what Michigan State needs to slow that potent Heels offense and pull off the upset.
