Wednesday’s slate and what to watch

It’s one of those delightful days when basketball started early – and provided an entertaining game, no less.

Iona’s 88-79 win against Richmond was yet another showcase for savvy Scott Macado and steady Michael Glover (the pair combined for 37 points, 14 rebounds and 15 assists, though all the assists were Machado’s). Perhaps that bodes well for the evening’s slate.

Cincinnati at Wright State, 7 p.m. (ESPN2)
The first post-brawl game for the Bearcats finds them on the road and without four players, including starting center Yancy Gates. If they’re to get back on track – the Raiders play Cincinnati’s speed and style – they’ll need more from guys like Sean Kilpatrick, Dion Dixon and Cashmere Wright. A loss wouldn’t be the worst thing for Mick Cronin’s team – some additional humbling and motivation for later – but the Bearcats’ play will be telling, win or lose.

Tennessee at College of Charleston, 9 p.m. (ESPN2)
The Vols (3-5) have lost three straight, which left coach Cuonzo Martin hinting at lineup changes. All but the home loss to Austin Peay were easily explained, so perhaps this is Martin’s attempt at ensuring Tennessee doesn’t lose confidence or focus before facing a team that’s 7-1 and has a true threat in junior Andrew Lawrence. Also, that Bobby Cremins can coach a little.

Eastern Washington at UCLA, 10:30 p.m. (FSWest, FCS Pacific)
The post-Reeves Nelson era opened with a win over Penn, a welcome sight to coach Ben Howland. The lax defense (the Quakers scored 1.14 points per possession) was not. Eastern Washington is a similar caliber opponent in that it can’t match up with the Bruins’ frontcourt, either. And maybe a 21-point outburst from guard Laz Jones is another promising sign.
