Buzz Williams’ dance to ‘Country Roads’ doesn’t sit well with some West Virginia fans

Feb 25, 2012, 12:15 AM EDT

Buzz Williams felt like dancing. Can’t say I blame him.

No. 10 Marquette overcame a 15-point deficit Friday night to win 61-60 at West Virginia. So Williams, the Golden Eagles’ charming coach, did a spin and a short little dance afterward, celebrating the win at one of the game’s rowdiest venues.

But he did it during “Country Roads,” which incensed some Mountaineer fans. Watch.

Williams should probably slip those security guards a $20 afterward. Guys earned their pay with that angry group.

So. Classless act or merely a guy elated that his team – which benched starters Darius Johnson-Odom, Junior Cadougan and Vander Blue for the first half due to violations of teams rules – managed to improve to 24-5 overall and 13-3 in the Big East despite playing poorly?

I’d buy what he told Bill Raftery in the postgame interview: “I was two stepping to this song. They got mad. I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, but I am very happy and pleased.”

He later went further, telling Gary Parrish of CBS Sports in a text: “Emotional response. Very unprofessional. I apologized in postgame. I was just excited.”

Winning in Morgantown is always cause for celebration. Perhaps Buzz is just a huge John Denver fan.

Not a fan of college basketball, but if that incenses you, I suggest you might want to go to Afghanistan, and join the “incensed” terrorists, who are protesting the burning of the Koran, and killing people.

People are WAY too easily upset.

I think those fans were just ticked because Buzz has his own teeth and is not married to his sister.

Caseytwjw, please, please, please tell me where you live. I’ll be glad to share with you Mountaineer Pride! If you want to make the vulgar stereotype statement, back it up you piece of shit!

Like I said, people get too upset, too easily. You are proof.

It was a joke, and maybe not a good one, but you want to fight over it? Idiot.

99% of WVU students think Jerry Sandusky should be allowed to molest boys. The other 1% think he’s innocent. WVU students are 10 times more likely to drive drunk everywhere they go as opposed to students of any other university. WVU students on average finish their degrees in 4 years but only because they’re all equivalent to a freshmen level class. In any other school a WVU student would either take 9 years to graduate or drop out altogether.

The only reason they love John Denver music out there is because he writes great music to $%#K your sister to. That is the most backwards, pathetic and hillbilly loaded school in the world. All of their programs are worthless and they have a terrible graduation rate. I bet they only offer courses in cow tipping and farm working.

The coach did nothing wrong. WV should apologize for the ridiculous behavior of their fans. Totally classless on the part of those students and the school.

I’d like to give you all the benefit of the doubt and assume you are intelligent, understanding people in real life…although every single comment made so far shows otherwise. The ignorance and animosity you all demonstrate is disgusting and, quite frankly, sad. Anonymity and the ability to hide behind a computer screen is no excuse for intolerance and hate. I’m not going to spend any more time on this drivel than I already have but, since no actual facts about WVU or the state of WV have been shared up to this point let me just throw a couple out there; WVU has produced the 6th highest number of Rhodes Scholars of any public institution of higher education in history. The former president of MIT is a WV native and WVU graduate. I could go on and on if you need me to.

Take care and I hope you all have a nice day,

Proud WV native and WVU Alumni

OMG… those fans were way out of line. Nobody owns that song… the coach had every right to be happy and dancing. It is a great song… and it was a great win… I am sure if UWV had won, those same fans would have been dancing on the court to it themselves…

And as for the low blows and insults being passed in the comment section… really? You should be ashamed of yourselves for posting such drivel…

Classless and stupid, but at least the fans at the game were in the heat of the moment. What excuse do the “fans” posting on here have?

And if your guys could have protected that 15-point lead, nobody from Marquette would have been dancing to any tune.
