Terrence Ross living up to declaration of Pac-12’s ‘best player’

If Terrence Ross is the Pac-12 top player, Thursday didn’t hurt his cause.

Washington’s sophomore scored 18 points in an 80-58 win Thursday against USC, a victory that clinched the Huskies at least a share of the league crown. If he ensures they win Saturday at UCLA, Ross could just take home the hardware.

Ross, a 6-6 wing, earned props Thursday when Arizona coach Sean Miller called him “the conference’s best player.” (Miller also said Washington’s Tony Wroten and Cal’s Jorge Gutierrez are 1b and 1c.) It’s easy to see why, too.

His 15.1 ppg don’t lead UW, but he’s a far more efficient scorer than Wroten (the leading scorer) and does it without having the ball in hands his nearly as much as Wroten. Put it this way: Wroten might be the guy who makes the plays, but Ross is the guy the Huskies want taking the last-second shots.

Ross was nowhere to be found during last weekend’s win s. Wazzu when Wroten made the difference, but he’s been their most consistent performer during league play.

If the Huskies take the title, it’s hard to envision a scenario where either Ross or Wroten don’t win top honors. And it’ll probably come down to the last game. So keep an eye on Saturday. It’ll be a biggie.
