Some perspective on Hoyas’ losses to double-digit seeds

Losing to double-digit seeds is getting to be a habit for Georgetown. But not all the double-digit losses are the same.

This marks for the fourth consecutive NCAA tournament in which the Hoyas were ousted by a team seeded 10th or lower: No. 10 Davidson (2008), No. 14 Ohio (’10), No. 11 VCU (’11) and No. 11 N.C. State this season.

It’d be cause for concern if they were all first-round losses or came against teams that were one-game wonders. But Davidson (featuring Steph Curry), won by four and eventually came up one basket shy of making the Final Four. VCU came into last season’s game red-hot and did reach the Final Four. N.C. State was an 11 seed, but it’s an ACC team featuring plenty of talent that’s won six of its last seven games.

Among those, only the 97-83 shellacking Ohio put on the Hoyas could be concerning, mostly because of the score (the Bobcats had some ballers, too). The other losses? Just part of playing in the tournament. Worse would be Vanderbilt’s three consecutive first-round ousters, all to double-digit seeds.

Georgetown finished 24-9 and one basket shy of the Sweet 16. It played over its head all season and lost to another over-achieving team. Not sure there’s anything wrong with that.

“We weren’t picked to do anything in the beginning of the season. Everybody doubted us,” senior Jason Clark said. “But as a group we believed in each other, and we proved a lot of people wrong.”
