This year Villanova head coach Jay Wright suffered his worst season as a head coach since his first years at Hofstra. And when it was over he learned that his leading scorer and 2nd Team All-Big East player Maalik Wayns was leaving for the NBA.

Now sources are saying that Dominic Cheek will be joining Wayns.

Cheek was one of the more highly regarded recruits to choose Villanova in recent memory. Coming out of legendary St. Anthony’s HS in Jersey City, ESPN had Cheek as the 19th rated player in the class of 2009.

His first two seasons were underwhelming, but then he blossomed this year as a high volume running mate for Wayns. Cheek attempted more 3-pointers than anyone on the roster.

He averaged 12.5 points a game. Cheek made half his 2-pointers, but shot only 32% from beyond the arc. At the line he shot over 80%.

It’s certainly no lock that he’ll be drafted, but he has the size and athleticism to stick at the next level.
