Video: Frank Martin’s move to S. Carolina a smart one

Frank Martin’s always been a gamer. Anyone who watched the coach prowl the sidelines and throw his glare toward a player or an official knows he’s not really afraid of anything.

That includes stepping away from a winning program to one that stinks.

South Carolina introduced the former Kansas State coach Tuesday, complete with praise from football coach Steve Spurrier and hundreds of Gamecocks fans who attended.

His six-year, $12.3 million contract ensures he’ll have time to recruit and build a program that’s been lacking in recent years. Well, for many, many years, actually. Martin might be the best coach to sit on the Gamecocks’ sideline, though Frank McGuire did have an NCAA tournament title when he took the gig in the ‘60s. But the school hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2004 and has just eight appearances in all.

“I’ve got to figure out a way, and that’s my job, to get them the confidence that they need to win that next game,” Martin said.

So how will he fare? Tom Brennan and Bobby Gonzalez think it’s a perfect move for Martin, who was 117-54 in five years at K-State. Can’t say I disagree.
