Report: Pat Kelsey to take over at Winthrop

According to Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com, former Xavier associate head coach Pat Kelsey will likely be the next head coach at Winthrop.

Winthrop relieved Randy Peele of his duties in early March following back-to-back losing seasons after leading the Eagles to NCAA tournament appearances in 2008 and 2010.

Kelsey made news last spring by stepping down from his position at Xavier, citing the daily grind of the job along with time away from his family as primary reasons for the decision.

Before working at Xavier Kelsey was an assistant at Wake Forest for the late Skip Prosser, and Prosser’s passing served as an eye-opener for Kelsey.

With this move it’s safe to assume that Kelsey’s ready to return to the game, and that’s good news for Winthrop as they get a coach considered by many to be a rising star in the profession before his departure.

Winthrop went 12-20 this season, which included an 8-10 record in Big South play. Kelsey will have quite the rebuilding project on his hands as each of Winthrop’s top four scorers this season were seniors.
