Bob Costas on John Calipari, one-and-dones and more

Apr 4, 2012, 12:45 PM EDT

Everyone seemingly has an opinion on college basketball’s one-and-done players. That’s usually followed by some sort of commentary on Kentucky coach John Calipari.

So what about someone who’s perfected the art of the spoken sports essay? What does Bob Costas think about the one-and-done world and Calipari’s place in it?

For that, I send you to this SportsTalk interview. Costas even goes old school for an idea of how to end any future one-and-dones.

“And in fact in the second semester, after the tournament is over, many of them may not have gone back to class.” [at the 0:44 mark]

Wait, what? On what basis does Costas make that assertion? Apart from Daniel Orton in Cal’s first year at Kentucky, I don’t know a single player who did not finish, or is not finishing, his classes. And Orton, it must be said, is not fondly remembered by Kentucky fans. Does Bob understand what would happen to Kentucky’s APR if “many of them” didn’t go back to class? Does he understand that Calipari makes his kids go back to class? I love Costas, but here, there is nothing “in fact” to support what he says.
