Not all high-level prospects set to produce next season

As more and more stories regarding the elite prospects in high school emerge – I think Dan’s written about 30 on the class of 2012 in the last week – it’s instructive to have as many perspectives on the prospects’ prospects as possible.

So, assuming you’ve read pretty much everything from Scout.com, Rivals.com and the other recruiting sites, may I offer Kevin Pelton’s take? The NBA analyst from Basketball Prospectus got a view of the 21 elite players who took part in the Nike Hoop Summit, most of whom will be playing college hoops next season.

What impressed him? Who stood out? This story at BP offers some familiar refrains (Shabazz Muhammad can score and plays hard, Nerlens Noel is a remarkable shot blocker, etc.), but I took the most interest in his assessment of Kyle Anderson and Mitch McGary.

Is the UCLA commit a guard? A forward? Can he defend quicker players? How will the Bruins’ adjust to his style? Sounds as if anything Anderson does will work for UCLA.

As for McGary, the future Michigan big man will get plenty of playing time, but his prospects to make an instant impact didn’t sway Pelton. Perhaps the Wolverines as a top 10 team might be jumping the gun.
