Sterling Gibbs headed to the Big East

The secret got out pretty quickly for New Jersey native Sterling Gibbs.

While on his visit to Seton Hall on Thursday, three Pirates — Fuquan Edwin, Aaron Geramipoor and Jordan Theodore — all tweeted that Gibbs had decided to continue his basketball career in Kevin Willard’s program. It didn’t take long after that for official word to come down: for the fifth straight season, there will be a Gibbs brother in the Big East.

“Shoutout to my lil bro @SterlingGibbs13 for making that move to Seton Hall University! Pirate for life! Get it done boy,” older brother Ashton, an all-conference guard at Pitt, tweeted out Thursday afternoon.

Gibbs played his freshman season at Texas after getting out of his letter of intent to Maryland when Gary Williams retired, but the combo-guard never was able to fully work his way into the rotation. The Longhorns not only had a talented perimeter attack, but their best players were all the same class as Gibbs. Combine the prospect of little playing time with the fact that he was so far from home, and it only made sense for Gibbs to make a move.

Seton Hall is going to make an effort to get Gibbs eligible immediately by seeking a hardship waiver, although it is unclear if they will end up being successful. He would fill an immediate hole for the Pirates at the point guard spot, as Theodore graduates this spring.
