Former Syracuse assistant Bernie Fine hired as consultant to Israeli team

More than seven months after he was fired from Syracuse over allegations of sexual molestation, Bernie Fine has found work.

In a statement released Thursday, Maccabi Haifa of the Israeli Basketball Super League announced the hiring of the former Syracuse assistant, who is to be brought on as a consultant.

According to the release, Fine will be in a position to assist the team in its search for a new coach, as well as help in player personnel decisions. He will work from the United States.

Fine currently lives in Syracuse, N.Y.

He worked for Syracuse for 36 seasons, prior to his firing.

This past month, one accuser, Zach Tomaselli, admitted that he fabricated e-mails to support his false report to police. He also told reporters that he “never met Bernie Fine in [his] life” and called himself a “sociopath.” That admission from Tomaselli came after he was convicted of molesting a child at a summer camp in Maine and sentenced to three years and three months in prison.

Syracuse worked through controversy without Fine this past season, going 34-3, before losing in the Elite Eight to Ohio State.

The Orange will be losing a number of players next season, including guards Scoop Jardine and Dion Waiters, forward Kris Joseph, and center Fab Melo.
