Kansas basketball teams to be honored by state senate today

Apr 27, 2012, 9:35 AM EST

Final Four Kentucky Kansas Basketball

Just over a week after the United States Senate passed a resolution honoring Kentucky for its national championship, the Kansas state senate will honor both Jayhawk basketball teams for their accomplishments.

Members of both teams will be on hand at the senate chambers in Topeka, with a resolution being read at 10 AM local time.

Bill Self’s Jayhawks had an outstanding season but fell short of their goal, falling to the Wildcats in the national title game by the final score of 67-59.

Thomas Robinson, expected to be a lottery pick in June’s NBA Draft, was a First Team All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year.

Also, the improvement of players such as Elijah Johnson, Tyshawn Taylor and Jeff Withey helped Kansas go 32-7 and win their eighth straight Big 12 title.

The women’s team, led by head coach Bonnie Henrickson, guard Angel Goodrich and forwards Carolyn Davis and Aisha Sutherland, went 21-13 and reached the Sweet 16 where they fell to Tennessee 84-73.
