Report: Utah State, San Jose State headed to Mountain West

According to Tony Jones of the Salt Lake Tribune more change could be in store for the WAC and Mountain West, with the former being dealt a blow that could prove to be too much to overcome.

According to Jones’ sources both San Jose State and Utah State are likely headed to the Mountain West, following Fresno State, Hawai’i and Nevada as the most recent schools to make the switch.

This news comes just days after UT-San Antonio appeared likely to scrap plans of joining the WAC in favor of Conference USA.

To say the least this is not a good development for the WAC or programs such as Idaho, who likely finds themselves in serious trouble when it comes to conference affiliation in the near future.

Denver, Seattle, UT-Arlington and Texas State are still slated to join the WAC with Boise State becoming a non-football member in 2013.

According to the story Utah State athletic director Scott Barnes is in Phoenix attending Mountain West meetings, but no date has been set as to when the move would be announced.

“Any decision, whatever decision is made by the Mountain West, is not months away, it is weeks away,” Barnes said following the logo/uniform unveiling on Saturday.

“There seemed to be some suggestions that we are already in. I want to clarify that the decision isn’t months away its weeks away or sooner. We like the progress being made, but no decisions have been made.”

Utah State, who will get to renew once-lost rivalries with the likes of Colorado State and Wyoming (all were members of the Mountain States Conference from 1938-62), unveiled their new logos and uniforms on Saturday afternoon.

While this is great news for both San Jose State and Utah State, this could prove to be the straw that broke the camel’s back in regards to the WAC.
