Texas Tech transfer DeShon Minnis commits to Rhode Island

Texas Tech guard DeShon Minnis will transfer to Rhode Island to play for new head coach Dan Hurley, the Philadelphia native tweeted Thursday afternoon.

Minnis, a 6-3 freshman, averaged 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds this past season in close to 16 minutes per game.

His biggest games of the year in the first and last games of the season, when he scored 12 points in an opening-night win over Troy and 10 in a season-ending loss to Oklahoma State.

We were reminded of Minnis’s biggest play of the season by Ballin’ Is A Habit’s Troy Machir. Click here to see a monstrous slam he had against Southeastern Louisiana.

Minnis now moves to a program at Rhode Island that is headed by Hurley, the former Wagner coach who replaced Jim Baron, who was fired after a 7-24 season.

Hurley is putting the Rams back on the right track, and Minnis could be part of a foundation that furthers those plans.

Gil Biruta, who averaged nine points and five rebounds for Rutgers this past season, transferred to Rhode Island. Jordan Hare, a 6-10 center from the Class of 2012, maintained his commitment after Baron’s firing.

2012 forward Mike Aaman comes over from Wagner with Hurley.

It may take some time, but Hurley is collecting pieces and has Rhode Island moving in the right direction.
