Findlay Prep star Bennett pops for UNLV

May 12, 2012, 6:12 PM EDT

UNLV was doing pretty darn well under Lon Kruger. When Kruger opted to take the rebuilding job at Oklahoma a year ago, Dave Rice came back to his alma mater with hopes of keeping his Rebels runnin’ without any slowdown.

Whatever the second-year head coach is doing, it’s working. The Rebs won 26 games last season, and returned to the NCAA tournament for the third time in as many seasons. Rice is now beginning to put his own stamp on the team with his 2012 recruiting class, which already included Katin Reinhardt, Demetris Morant and DaQuan Cook, as well as Pitt transfer Khem Birch. To those luminaries, Rice has just added Findlay Prep forward Anthony Bennett. Bennett’s Twitter announcement was short and sweet: ”Staying out west and will be going to UNLV next year.”

The 6’7″ Bennett is considered a top-10 big man, and he’s drawing comparisons to a UNLV legend, according to Hoopniks.com:

(C)omparisons to former UNLV great Larry Johnson will be inevitable for Bennett. His power, agility and toughness immediately call to memory the game of Johnson in the glory years at UNLV. Bennett is a native of Canada that spent the last couple seasons playing at a high school basketball powerhouse in Findlay Prep, where he was on a star-studded team.

He had a non-traditional recruitment in that he took no official visits, and cut Kentucky and Florida from his list before naming UNLV and Oregon as finalists.

We may want to wait a bit  before anointing Bennett as the next Grandmama, but the comparisons are flattering, to say the least. In fact, since Rice played with LJ back in the day, we’ll believe it if and when he puts his stamp of approval on the hyperbole.

Commence breath-holding.

Can’t wait for John Cheatapari to skip town and leave your program on probation and a vacated national title.

Uhhhh actually Bennett cut UF because his only reason to go there declared for the draft and UK is still recruiting Jefferson…Bennett and his mom have a great relationship with the staff and he lives in Vegas the last 2 years…Get your facts str8 BBN…Stop hating! And live it up while you can…How much longer do you expect Cal to stay at UK???

  5. jthammerstix - May 13, 2012 at 8:53 AM

Bbn isn’t a real thing. It’s just a group of unrealistic rednecks. Go to hell uk fans!

  6. imforbigblue - May 13, 2012 at 9:14 AM

Lol I love all you UNLV fans who talk about cheating how soon you forget your old coach the shark. Plus your no where near the level of UK never have been never will. Try winning a championship before you guys run your mouth. Plus we don’t need Bennett to still have the #2 class so no I’m not a hater were still better than you and will be top 5 coming off our 8th title. You team ain’t crap just like last year come talk to me when you at least make a FF

    • AlohaMrHand - May 13, 2012 at 11:20 AM

Tark hasn’t been at UNLV in over 20 years son,and how bout your racist hero Adolph Rupp of you wanna question character? And again when Cal leaves right before the hammer is dropped lets see how much you wanna spout off.I know plenty of good Kentucky fans and you sure as hell ain’t one of em.

  7. jthammerstix - May 13, 2012 at 12:06 PM

I hope you get aids big blue. You are a terrible person.

  8. greatbballfan - May 13, 2012 at 12:31 PM

Gus, Guys, Guys please try to be civil and objective. I congratulate UNLV on landing a potentially great power forward. Wish I could have seen him play at UK and I think his talents would have greatly impacted UK’s season. Besides I think he looks better in a UK jersey. UNLV will be a very good team with two top-100 picks plus transfer Birch to play for Coach Rice. Bennett undoubtly wanted to stay near his home and I wish him and family all the best.

  9. gq2scoops - May 13, 2012 at 1:03 PM

Thanks bballfan!!! Reinhardt, Morant, Cook, Bennett with transfers Jones and Birch with our current studs like Marshall equals minimum S16…Cal will never retire at UK…It’s only a matter of time before investigations hit UK like UMass and Memphis and/or the NBA gives him an offer he can’t refuse…Sorry…I’m not a UK hater, just a Calipari hater…Go Rebels!!!

  10. jthammerstix - May 13, 2012 at 1:03 PM

    ^Who’s Gus? uk is nothing

  11. imforbigblue - May 13, 2012 at 1:49 PM

God I love you UNLV fans and your tired crap of how Cal cheated. If you had half a brain and got on the Internet and looked it up the NCAA not once punished Cal for anything. He turned his own player in for taking money at umass and how could he have cheated at Memphis when rose was still in high school when another guy took his test. It was the great NCAA who cleared rose to play then after the season was over said he wasnt aloud to play then made Memphis give up the FF but before you run your mouth about things you don’t know keep it shut. Your sorry team isn’t even on UKs level never has been never will be

  12. imforbigblue - May 13, 2012 at 1:52 PM

Again trying winning something or making it past the first two weeks of the turny before you open your mouth saying UK isn’t anything because I’ve got 8 good reasons to know why UKs better than your sorry ass team. Good luck with Bennett making the grades to even step foot on your basketball court lol

  13. chitownjeff - May 14, 2012 at 12:46 PM

When Univ. of Kentucky’s basketball team visited the White House recently President Obama showed them the White House library.. It’s been pretty clear that none of the team had viewed one in Lexington..

  14. imforbigblue - May 14, 2012 at 7:19 PM

That’s funny the whole starting for UK will be making more money than your whole family your coaching staff at UNLV and there family all together. So I’m sure they could care less what a pee on like you or your crap team thinks. Like I said come talk trash after you win something
