After taking Norfolk State to the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament, head coach Anthony Evans was rewarded with a 3-year contract extension the school announced on Friday.
Evans, who has a record of 78-82 in five seasons at Norfolk State, led the Spartans to a school-record (as a Division I member) 26 wins and a victory over 2-seed Missouri.
“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity that Dr. Atwater and Mr. Miller have given me in continuing to lead the men’s basketball program,” Evans said in a statement released by the school.
“I look forward to building on the program’s recent success in the coming years.”
In leading Norfolk State to its first NCAA appearance as a Division I member Evans was also awarded the Clarence “Big House” Gaines Award, which is awarded annually to the nation’s top Division I minority head coach.
While Norfolk State will have to replace three of its top four scorers from last season, most notably forward Kyle O’Quinn, the Spartans do return some key contributors with guard Pendarvis Williams (11.9 ppg) leading the way.
