South Carolina AD Eric Hyman hired to same position at Texas A&M

South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman is leaving his position with the Gamecocks to take the same job at Texas A&M, the school announced Friday.

“I am very excited for the opportunity to help transition Texas A&M into the Southeastern Conference,” said Hyman in a release from the school. “While this is a tremendous opportunity, the downside is leaving all the dedicated and loyal fans in Gamecock Nation and the best athletic department in the country. Pauline and I have loved living in Columbia. It will be sad to leave all the wonderful friends we have made.”

Hyman has been with South Carolina since 2005 when he came over from TCU.

Under his watch, South Carolina did much to improve their facilities, including renovating men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms and coaches’ offices.

South Carolina is transitioning with head coach Frank Martin now at the helm of the program after predecessor Darrin Horn was fired this spring. The Gamecocks finished 10-21 this past season, including 2-14 in the SEC.

Texas A&M, on the other hand, is going through a transition of its own, moving to become an in-conference rival of South Carolina’s in the SEC.

Under head coach Billy Kennedy in 2011-12, the Aggies finished 14-18, including 4-14 in the Big 12.

“We wish Eric well in his next endeavor. The University of South Carolina bears the marks of his leadership- from enhanced facilities to the hiring of strong coaches to higher student graduation rates,” South Carolina president Harris Pastides said in the release. “We will miss him on our team, but his legacy has made us stronger.”
