RaShawn ‘Pookie’ Powell becomes third 2013 commit for Josh Pastner at Memphis

Josh Pastner

Josh Pastner’s early success in the 2013 class continued Saturday, as the Memphis Tigers secured a commitment from RaShawn “Pookie” Powell, Powell announced via his Twitter account.

“I committed to Memphis university..tiger nation,” he wrote.

Powell, a 6-0 guard from Orlando, Fla., chose Memphis over Illinois and Alabama, becoming the third prospect to commit to Pastner and the Tigers from the Class of 2013.

He joins Markel Crawford and Top-30 prospect Nick King in a class that is already Top 10 in the country.

Being that this is Memphis’ last season in Conference USA, Pastner’s class will be the first as the Tigers assimilate into the Big East.

Powell is a compact, quick, scoring-oriented guard who should fit well into Pastner’s up-and-down, attacking offense. He becomes Memphis’ second Top-100 prospect from the Class of 2013.

Over the summer with his AAU team, the Florida Assault Showtime, he scored 47 points in Las Vegas.

The Tigers were 33rd in the nation last season in scoring at 75.3 points per game, finishing with an overall record of 26-9, including 13-3 in the C-USA.

They lost to St. Louis in the Round of 64 of the NCAA tournament.
