Rhode Island gets second commitment in two days, scores NYC native Hassan Martin

Dan Hurley

New Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley is on a roll this weekend, continuing to fill his 2013 recruiting class with talent that he’ll be bringing to Kingston.

First it was E.C. Matthews, the Top-100 guard from Michigan, and now Hassan Martin, a 6-6 forward from New York City, Zach Braziller of the New York Post first reported.

Martin is an athletic, powerful mid-major forward who is a solid rebounder and can run the floor. He chose Rhode Island over St. Joseph’s and Providence.

Hurley made Martin a priority on the recruiting trail this summer, reportedly attending nearly all of his games during the live period with his team, New Heights NYC.

Rhode Island finished 7-24 last season, including 4-12 in the A-10. Coach Jim Baron was fired at the end of the season, opening the door for Hurley’s move from Wagner.

For Hurley, who missed out on guards Josh Brown and Hallice Cooke, two seniors who play for Hurley’s father at St. Anthony HS (N.J.), the commitments of Martin and Matthews set the Rams on course for a strong 2013 class.

Rhode Island will need success like this on the recruiting trail, especially considering Hurley will now be recruiting against two more nationally prominent coaches in the A-10: Brad Stevens at Butler and Shaka Smart at VCU.
