I don't think the schools can play the players, especially considering that so many of these programs are cashing in because their athletic department operates in the red. I do, however, believe that the players should be allowed to profit off of themselves. Allow them to be sponsored. Use the Olympic model. They'll profit off their market value, and you lose the issue of determining the difference in pay for, say, the star quarterback and the basketball walk-on.

I think we are pushing closer and closer to Congressional intervention in the NCAA.

The beuracratic nature of the NCAA rules as well as the ridiculous money grab that is conference realignment.

As to the paying the players, where do you draw the line? The only way I could see it working is that any athlete could get Work Study aid for practice-game time. Aside from the expenses and per diems that can be considered payment, there are multiple Title IX, revenue generating vs. non-revenue generating, and Division 1, 2, and 3 aspects that would lead to the only ones making money being the attorneys.

It is a very tangled web, but just pay them isn't likely untangle it.

Why exactly is it the NCAA's fault that this kid is potentially ruining his NBA career? He could have declared for the NBA draft after last season and none of this would have happened. I think the bigger problem, and this is especially true in football, is that the NCAA has been forced to become the developmental league for the pro leagues.
