Game of the Day
No. 16 Creighton 79, Illinois State 72: Ethan Wragge had 18 points and hit six of Creighton’s 13 threes as the Bluejays won a shootout against the Redbirds. Illinois State hit 13 threes of their own, but it was a missed three from Jackie Carmichael with ISU down three and less than 20 seconds left on the clock that ended up being the back-breaker.
Grant Gibbs was once again a killer for Creighton against ISU. In the MVC tournament title game a year ago, he had 20 points as the Redbirds dared him to shoot. On Wednesday, he finished with 16 points and seven assists.
No. 1 Duke 67, Davidson 50: The Blue Devils shook off an off-night from Mason Plumlee to knock off a scrappy Davidson team that looked primed — for 20 minutes, at least — to remind the country why they were picked as one of the nation’s best mid-major. The Wildcats pounded the offensive glass in the first half, collecting 14 second-chance points en route to a 29-all tie at the break. But Duke used a 19-4 run to open the second half to put away the Wildcats.
Purdue 68, No. 11 Illinois 61: Illinois is not built for the road.
No. 7 Syracuse 78, Rutgers 53: Boeheim got his 903rd win.
Missouri Valley: In addition to Creighton’s win at Illinois State, Wichita State knocked off Drake on the road and Indiana State beat Northern Iowa at Northern Iowa. I think it’s safe to say that the Sycamores are the third-best team in the Valley, behind Creighton and Wichita State. But what has happened to the Panthers?
Wyoming 59, SMU 56: The Cowboys remained undefeated with a win at SMU despite playing without second-leading scorer Luke Martinez.
Tymell Murphy, Florida International: Murphy became the second player this season to post a 20-20 games, finishing with 24 points and 20 boards in a win over FAMU. Towson’s Jerelle Benimon had 20 points and 21 boards in a win over Oregon State on Saturday.
Ryan Harrow, Kentucky: It was a 52 point blow out, I know, but Harrow but together another impressive performance. He had 15 points and eight assists.
Kendall Anthony, Richmond: The 5-foot-8 Anthony was a spot start for the Spiders, but the move paid off; he had 31 points and hit seven threes in a 91-68 win over Air Force.
Florida State: The Seminoles lost 78-72 to Auburn despite shooting 48.3% from the floor and getting 18 points and 12 boards from Michael Snaer.
Xavier: Travis Taylor had 18 points and was 9-10 from the floor. The rest of the Musketeers were 12-39 from the field and managed just 41 points in a 66-59 loss to Wake Forest.
Marshall: I know the Thundering Herd are playing without Deandre Kane, but Marshall was supposed to be the second-best team in Conference USA. They just lost at home to Delaware State.

Among the many interested observers at No. 10 Duke’s 79-69 win over No. 22 Michigan was former Duke great Grant Hill, who during his time in Durham was an incredibly versatile player. In analyzing the play of current Duke freshman forward Jabari Parker, some have made the comparison between the Chicago native and Hill. On…

With the changes in the way that contact is being called, college basketball has seen an increase in the number of fouls called and the number of free throws attempted in 2013-14. This has been one reason why scoring’s increased after being historically low last season; added opportunities to score by way of an “unchallenged”…

A J.J. Avila layup with a second remaining on Saturday gave Colorado State a dramatic 85-83 victory over New Mexico State, and it turns out that the result may have come at an even greater cost for the Aggies. Junior reserve forward Remi Barry went down in the first half with a left knee injury,…

GAME OF THE DAY: North Carolina at No. 1 Michigan State, 9:00 p.m. ET So which North Carolina team shows up tonight? Will it be the one that beat Louisville handily at Mohegan Sun earlier this season, or is it the group that lost to Belmont at home and UAB on the road? The Tar…

DURHAM, N.C. — The story of No. 10 Duke’s 79-69 win over No. 22 Michigan on Tuesday night was some combination of the Blue Devils’ defensive prowess and the Wolverine’s offensive struggles. Whether you believe that Michigan’s horrendous night, which saw them score 50 points and shoot 39.1% from the floor in the first 38…

On Tuesday night, Duke knocked off Michigan at Cameron Indoor Stadium, which was big news for both the Blue Devils, who had been struggling defensively for much of the first month of the season, and the Wolverines, who have never looked this bad offensively in the John Beilein era. It was bigger news for Coach…

Who is the best shooter in the country? It’s a tough question to answer, isn’t it? Does being a “shooter” simply mean merely being a high-level marksman from beyond the arc? Can a player who thrives in the mid-range but rarely ventures out into three-point land be eligible? How heavily should we be valuing stats like…

Tuesday was a big night for Stetson’s basketball program. Not only did the Hatters pick up their first win of 2013, but Kentwan Smith made became Stetson’s first player to make it to POSTERIZED. Alley-oops off of a set play are the best, aren’t they? (h/t Dan Forcella)

It took until the later stages of the second half, but No. 18 UCLA remained undefeated following a 89-76 win tover UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night at Pauley Pavilion. The game was much closer than the final score, as one of the contenders in the Big West gave the Bruins a fight throughout. The Gauchos…

The Big Ten got its first win in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge from Iowa’s offensive firepower. The Hawkeyes, playing in front of a raucous crowd, held off a Notre Dame second half comeback, countering the rally and holding off the Fighting Irish in a 98-93 win on Tuesday night. DURHAM, N.C. — Caris LeVert is a good basketball player. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that there aren’t five players in college basketball that are more improved than No. 22 Michigan’s 6-foot-6 sophomore, and nothing about the 24 points he had against No. 10 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Tuesday…

The second half of Tuesday night looked a lot like last March’s Sweet Sixteen game when the Syracuse zone defense caused problems for the Indiana offense. The Hoosiers tied the game early in the second half before falling into a 13-minute drought. During which the Orange broke open the game, claiming the first game in their…

Troy Williams had four points in the first half of Indiana’s ACC-Big Ten Challenge contest against No. 4 Syracuse. The first two points were off an uncontested breakaway dunk after he intercepted a Tyler Ennis pass. This was his second bucket of the evening, and as you can see there were a few bodies in…

Michigan State sophomore guard Gary Harris injured his ankle in late August, though, that force him to miss any regular season games. Conference play is still weeks away. The ACC should have another exciting season with three new program’s joining the conference. Despite the changes in the league, one thing has remained the same for ACC competition for years: How do you spell Coach K’s last name? North Carolina’s Brice Johnson, Notre Dame’s Eric Atkins, Virginia’s Joe Harris,…
