Late Night Snacks: Pac-12 action highlights a slow night

California v UCLA

LOS ANGELES, CA - JANUARY 03: Shabazz Muhammad #15 of the UCLA Bruins pulls down a rebound between Richard Solomon (L) #35 and David Kravish #45 of the California Golden Bears in the first half at Pauley Pavilion on January 3, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty Images)

Game of the Day

No. 3 Arizona 92, Colorado 83 OT: The shame in the refs blowing a call (calls?) on Sabatino Chen’s would-have-been game-winning three is that it ruined the talking point for what was a terrific finish. Arizona erased a 10 point deficit in the final four minutes to tie the game in the final ten seconds.

USC 71, Stanford 69: The Cardinal blew a nine-point halftime lead, suffering a painful loss that will sting even more when Stanford is trying to figure out whether or not they will make the bubble cut. Making matters worse? Stanford’s two best players had looks at the end of regulation that could have forced overtime.

Important Outcomes

UCLA 79, Cal 65: Kyle Anderson had 19 points and 12 boards, Shabazz Muhammad went for 16 and Larry Drew had nine more assists without committing a turnover as UCLA rolled over the Bears. I’ve changed my opinion on the Bruins since Josh Smith and Tyler Lamb left. They run, they score and they’ve embraced their roster limitations. More importantly, they’re fun to watch and look like they’re having fun playing basketball. That hasn’t always been true for the Bruins under Ben Howland.

North Texas 76, Troy 59: I know that it’s Troy and I know that Troy is now 5-10 on the season and 0-4 in the Sun Belt, but Tony Mitchell finally looked like the Tony Mitchell we thought he would be this season. He finished with 29 points, 15 boards and four blocks.

Arkansas-Little Rock 75, Western Kentucky 67: The Hilltoppers dropped their first league game of the year, meaning that ...

South Alabama 77, Louisiana-Monroe 72: ... South Alabama is now tied with WKU for the best record in the Sun Belt. Augustine Rubit had 32 points and 13 boards in the win.

Starred

Trey Burke, Michigan: Burke had 23 points, five assists, four steals and at least three ankle-breaking crossovers as the No. 2 Wolverines beat Northwestern 94-66.

Jonathon Lee, Northeastern: Lee had 20 points and four assists as the Huskies went into Fairfax, VA, and knocked off George Mason.

Louis Montes, Sacred Heart: Montes had 35 points and eight boards as Sacred Heart knocked off LIU-Brooklyn to pick up just their third win of the season.

Damen Bell-Holter, Oral Roberts: 35 points and 14 boards is impressive, even if it does come against SE Louisiana.

Stunk

The refs working Colorado-Arizona: It wasn’t just the last call. They were really, really bad down the stretch.

Southern Miss: They beat some team named Dillard 135-41. It begs the question: why is Southern Miss playing a team they can beat by 94 points in January?
