Fresno State loses one player, gets another back, and beats UNLV

Feb 7, 2013, 2:15 PM EST

Fresno State made noise on Wednesday night when they knocked off UNLV at home, throwing the Mountain West race into a frenzy.

But there was much more to the 64-55 win than a simple upset.

The Bulldogs played without star freshman Robert Upshaw, who has been suspended by the university for three games following a violation of team rules. Upshaw was averaging 4.8 points and 4.1 boards this season.

The personnel news wasn’t all bad for the Bulldogs, however.

Kansas transfer Braeden Anderson, who was a partial qualifier with the Jayhawks and ineligible for the first 20 games of the season, played his first collegiate basketball game. He finished with no points and two boards in 12 minutes, but he’s back in the mix.

We knew that Fresno State was a season away from being relevant, especially with Oklahoma State transfer Cezar Guerrero sitting out this season, but this is just a glimpse of how good that Rodney Terry’s team can be in the future.
