As an IU fan, I love the guy. His teams always are in the mix, and you can usually see the positive progression they make throughout a season. I think he’s a classy dude, and I don’t think he was making excuses. He was saying that having an aggressive, penetrating guy out with foul trouble hurt them. I think you’re putting too much into the remaining context of his comment.

Regardless, I do hope that Trice is OK and is back for MSU soon. I think this team is extremely dangerous at full strength. (Doubly so, if you let their guy continue to handle clock duties in close games.) ;)
