Coach K, Duke concerned over safety after Virginia court storming

Mar 1, 2013, 6:10 PM EDT

Coach K

Mike Krzyzewski is familiar with storming the court tradition in his career at Duke, especially when being on the wrong end. Since 1997, Duke has lost on the road 50 times — 42 times resulting in fans rushing the floor. Following Thursday’s 73-68 loss to Virginia (and subsequent  court storming), Coach K raised safety issues in the post game press conference.

“Whatever you’re doing, you need to get the team off first,” Coack K told reporters following the game. “Look, celebrate, have fun, obviously you won, that’s cool. Just get our team off the court and our coaching staff before students come on.

“I’m always concerned about stuff like that, especially at this time of the year. What if that happened and we get a kid suspended? That becomes the national story. It’s not all fun and games when people are rushing the court, especially for the team that lost. Again, congratulations to them, and they should have fun and burn benches and do all that stuff. I’m all for that. They have a great school, great kids, but get us off the court. That’s the bottom line.”

The Raleigh News & Observer also reported that Coach K was not attempting to take away from the Cavaliers’ win, but his concern was proven valid in a report Andrew Jones of

The 66-year-old Krzyzewski stopped and hollered an F-bomb at a fan before security could drag him away. Right behind the Hall of Fame coach were his players, some cursing at fans, some ignoring it and ducking into the hallway. Assistant coach Jeff Capel went back and yelled a few curse words while another assistant coach, Steve Wojciechowski, did his best to quickly usher players into the safe area.

It’s been an unpredictable college basketball season so far, storming the court has been a common theme. Many will react to Coach K’s comments as just plain whining and from this video it looks as if UVA security did a good job for the most part. Yet he’s been through court storming enough to know the risk and this season has shown it’s a legitimate concern. It only takes one incident from either a fan, coach, or even a player before this becomes full blown problem.

Whether you are pro-storming and believe it’s good for the game or you feel the tradition needs to end or at least tweaked in away, this issue is far from being over.

Oh, poor baby. All this guy does is piss and moan when Duke loses. Shut up and deal with it. Nobody else complains, just Coach K.

I notice that when Duke fan storm the court after wins over UNC he never complained. I guess that is different, right Coach K?

Read what he said. He was gracious. He simply pointed out safety concerns. Save your hatred for when they’ve earned it.

This has just gone beyond the point of being ridiculous. I am a graduate of Indiana University, class of ’76, when we won it all going 32-0! If we had ever even thought of storming the court, Knight would have grabbed the PA mike to read us the riot act. So IU loses at Minnesota this week, Gopher fans storm the court. Great, they beat us, the #1 ranked team. But this BS of storming the court after beating any ranked team is bush league and getting real old real fast. No class!

I’m an IU grad as well as COMPLETELY DISAGREE. Storming the court is a great ritual and I think if its a top 5 team vs an unranked then it’s totally acceptable. One of the all-time great moments of the last 20 years at IU was last year beating Kentucky. That was an amazing and safe court storm.

IU grad too. I have no issue w/unranked teams storming their home floor after a win over a top 5 opponent. It’s happened to both IU & Duke multiple times this year. Part of college hoops & the college experience.

There has practically never been a problem in court storming history. K is just sore from losing.

Hey Coach K…you don’t like it…win the game! Point blank.

i saw the video of the security forming a wall between the fans and the duke players/coaches…they where not even close to being touched…stop crying like a little girl coach k. and take your lose like a man

You should never storm the court against a Conference opponent. Its really not a big deal when you beat a team in your conference.

Stormimg the court should be saved for major upsets, thats when its special. Some of these ACC schools have been playing each other since the 1950’s, its really not that big of a deal when you have beaten the school on numerous occassions in the past.

Someone is going to end up getting hurt, its going to end up being some fans getting into fights with the losing team.Or we are going to hear about some kid getting trampled, then the world is going to go on its week long outrage, and people are going to get fired. Outside the Lines, CNN, Good Morning America, anyone with airtime is going to make this into the biggest issue in the world, we are going to have candle light vigiles for those hurt in court stormings, everyone is going to learn about the history of court storming, anytype of injury that has ever occured in a court storming you will hear that story, moments of silence before games, etc, etc, etc…and then media will move onto its next topic. Maybe the topic of courtside seats should be reviewed and the foul language that is used by those with money….shocking behavior.

Just clap in the stands and go party somewhere else celebrating the victory.

Jay Bilas, quit apologizing for Coach K. Duke lost to an unranked team. If Coach K doesn’t like it, I offer suggestions. Win the game. Recruit better talent. Or just retire and make some more bad American Express ads so we don’t have to listen to you piss and moan.

Indiana fans certainly cannot condemn rushing the court after a big win. He’ll, you’re still painting pictures about the win over Kentucky last year! Nothing classless about an underdog rushing the court

  13. texizz - Mar 15, 2014 at 10:20 AM

Storming the court is dangerous! Is someone going to have to get hurt or killed before anything is done? Fans have the right to celebrate but they don’t have the right to injure someone!
