DJ Cooper does something that’s never been done before

Ohio v Bowling Green

College basketball has been around for 120 years, so when we say that DJ Cooper did something tonight that no one in the history of college basketball has ever done before, than you should understand that there is a little bit of weight behind that statement.

With a little more than eight minutes left in the first half and Ohio down 23-19 at Buffalo, Cooper hit his second three of the game -- which, as the Hustle Belt describes it, was a patented, five-feet-behind-the-three-point-line, DJ Cooper special -- which gave him 2,002 points for his career.

He had already eclipsed 900 career assists. And 600 career rebounds. And 300 career steals.

He’s the only player, in the history of the sport, to ever accomplish that feat.

Now, these aren’t round numbers. This isn’t like Hank Aaron’s homerun record or Eric Dickerson’s rushing yards record. People aren’t going to be able to recite this kind of achievement off the top of their head, largely because DJ Cooper has spent most of his career slightly off the national grid and because it’s the result of continued excellence in all-around ability, not because he’s the best in the world at one skill.

We’ll forget about this before Selection Sunday comes around.

But while we still have your attention, it needs to be noted.

Because DJ Cooper has had a phenomenal career at Ohio. He’s a terrific player that’s not only won a lot of games, he’s beaten a No. 3 seed as a freshmen and made the Sweet 16 as a junior. He deserves to recognition for what he’s done.

So kudos to you, DJ.

I know I speak for a lot of people when I say that these last four years have been a pleasure.

Oh, and I should probably mention that Ohio won tonight, keeping them a game behind Akron in the MAC standings.

The game-winning bucket?

A DJ Cooper three-pointer.
