Who is the most hated college basketball player in the last three decades?

Mar 11, 2013, 2:05 PM EDT

Christian Laettner

Grantland has out a niche for themselves in the blogging world by creating “brackets” to settle arguments that have no need to be settled but could go on for hours and hours in the right setting.

They did one to determine the greatest character in the history of The Wire. They did one to determine the greatest Chappelle’s Show skit ever. And now, they’ve got a bracket up with to sole purpose of determining the most hated player in college basketball in the past three decades.

And really, the bracket structure is flawless.

There’s one region for players the ’80s, one for players from the ’90s, one for players from the ’00s and one for players from Duke.

Given how much the general public despises the Blue Devils, it’s tough to imagine that the winner of the Duke region won’t be the overwhelming favorite heading into the Final Four. I mean, just look at some of those names: Christian Laettner, Steve Wojciechowski, Greg Paulus, JJ Redick.

Tyler Hansbrough will be a favorite coming from the other side of the bracket, but here’s a sleeper pick for you: Aaron Craft. He’s currently the nation’s best “little white guy who gets showered with all the cliche intangible terms”, which is the easiest way to find yourself hated. Throw in the current relevancy of the Big Ten, and Craft has a chance to make a run to the Final Four.

But, in the end, we all know who is going to win.

Kentucky fans dominate every single online poll in the college basketball world, and every single one of them has a special spot in their heart dedicated solely to hating Christian Laettner.

It will be a landslide.

Which player did you hate the most in the last three decades?

“Grantland has out a niche for themselves”
    Makes perfect sense.

    Without any doubt it’s Laettner.

Tells me just how successful Duke is when they are the only school to get their own bracket. Hopefully the Blue Devils will add another championship this season. GO DUKE!!!!!!!

Thanks Rob. Sometimes I think you write these stories just for me!

  3. bordner - Mar 11, 2013 at 4:26 PM

All it really shows you how successful Duke is at recruiting players that NO ONE ELSE CAN STAND! It’s funny – I’ve always liked Duke as a program, but man, they get some annoying players.

As far as Michael Graham from the 80’s bracket – are you kidding? He was awesome! If not for just the reason that he was one of the first players to shave his head, then for the way he’d pull the rebounds down, elbows flying everywhere! I loved watching him!

I agree. . . nobody cares one way or the other when you suck and for Duke to have their own “region” shows how they have pretty much dominated college basketball over the last 30 years.

    Haters gonna Hate

“Dominated”???? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Dream on Dookie. The only reason they got their own section is the author is another Duckie. It says a lot that you people are proud of being hated. And if you think UK fans hate Laettner because he beat the Cats you’re even more nuts. They hate him because he should have been ejected for the stomp. The ref even said he would have ejected him and Timberlake if Aminu had jumped up and fought back. Both would have been ejected. People hate him because he was a dirty bastard of a player. He wasn’t nearly as good as you Dorks think he is either. Ask UNLV. Without Grant Hill Duke wouldn’t have won either of those titles.

BTW I think it’s UK that has dominated the game. Of course you pick 30 years to eliminate the 1978 championship game where UK beat the Dorks. How about who has been best in the last 2 years? I can cherry pick too. Going back to 1978 the number of titles is dead even between UK and Duke with UK winning the last one. How you figure that means Duke “dominated” is just silly.

And of course most right minded fans don’t like Duke because of their rancid attitude toward other teams and players. You think you’re being so cute with your personal insults. I think you’re a disgrace to humanity. You people have never heard of sportsmanship unless it was preceded by “bad”.

UK is the total opposite end of the spectrum from Duke. Where you insult we applaud the effort of rivals. Where you roll around on the court trying to get the ref to make calls that simply aren’t deserved (that’s called “cheating”) UK wins by actually having more talent and desire.

BTW despite your wishes I don’t hate Laettner more than any other player. That would have to be Corey Maggette, the cheating slime ball that the NCAA let slide. Oh yeah. He played for Duke too.

Actually, if you go by eras, Duke was dominant in the late 80’s/early 90’s. (spoken from the perspective of an IU fan).

I hated Laettner because he was this pretty-boy, pompous guy that carried himself like a jackass. Then, on top of it, he was so dang good/clutch that it made the hate worse.

As far as other Duke players, can’t really say I hated any of them (T Hill, G Hill, Hurley, J Williams, C Parks – although he was close, because he looked like a Laettner wannabe), more respected and was disgusted by the fact that they were so good for so long. Also, on that note, I like Ryan Kelly, especially after his article about “why don’t people hate me more…”. FUNNY stuff.

    Chris Jackson. Period.

Anybody that has worn a Kentucky jersey, especially Travis Ford.

  7. ausernamethatisavailable - Mar 11, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Why all the hatin on the white guys?

  8. longtallsam - Mar 11, 2013 at 9:22 PM

Michigan’s entire “fab five”, with Jalen Rose heading the list. He never once dribbled the ball upcourt without palming it! As for hating all the Duke guys…that’s not hate, just jealousy.

    • zapainhurtzalot - Mar 15, 2013 at 9:07 AM

AMEN!!! After watching the ESPN 30 for 30 about them, what a classless bunch of narcissistic butt-nuggets! All Jalen Rose did during that show was bitch about how Michigan was making all the money from their names on jerseys and such and whine about not getting any of that money. I teach at a Division I school and last I checked, no students, not even the “all star athletes” make any money from these items! And to beat all they never brought home a title.

But as far as individuals go, Duke should have their own bracket. I agree Laetner is near the top of the list, but Bobby Hurley gets my vote! Can coach K (k for komplain, which is all he does no matter if his team is winning or losing. Watch him during every time out bitching at the refs about something ALL THE TIME, EVERY TIME!! Bob Knight may have been an arrogant jerk, but K is just a plain ol’ butt hole!!!

UNC grad and fan here and I hated Dook before hating Dook was kool!!!!!!!!!! Go Heels!

Who is the idiot who crafted this question? It says a lot more about that person than anyone else. Give us a break.

  10. juliath83 - Mar 12, 2013 at 12:49 AM

There’s not one Duke player that would be on that list if it weren’t for Dickie V and the ESPN hype machine. Maybe Wojo for slapping the floor, that was annoying. Otherwise, I think most basketball fans do not so much hate the players themselves as they do the 24/7, non-stop hype surrounding everything Duke. I don’t hate Duke because they’re good, I’m just tired of not being able to turn on SportsCenter without hearing 10 minutes tomes about them.

    • zapainhurtzalot - Mar 15, 2013 at 9:11 AM

I refuse to listen to Vitale call any game. I hit the mute button. What an idiot! He makes great commentary when he’s not calling a game, but turns into a dolt during a game.

    • kingghidora - Mar 15, 2013 at 2:12 PM

It’s not just the hype machine. The fact the NCAA gave Corey Maggette a free ride despite a mountain of evidence he took money from an agent plus Duke gets to play in their home state every year in the tournament. I counted this up last year because UK finally got to play in KY again. From the time before that when UK played in their state until last year Duke played TWENTY-SEVEN games in NC. So it was Duke 27 – UK – 0. How’s that fair? Duke got to play 11 minutes from their campus in some of those games. They probably dressed in their home lockers. What a crock that is.

I think the NCAA is catching on that Duke will never be “America’s Team”. I see lots of columns now that talk about how Duke is ruining the game because of the unfair treatment they get. Here’s an example:

      http://voices.yahoo.com/how-duke-university-hurting-college-basketball-869459.html?cat=9

      Here’s another:

      There are others.

    Final Four:

1.(Duke) Dream Team Hall of Famer, Laettner
    2(80’s).Late entry, JR Reid
    3.(00’s)Hansbrough
4.(90’s) another late entry, Jimmy Jackson

  12. arlingtonsynn - Mar 12, 2013 at 9:57 PM

Now that I think about it… I am having problems thinking of any Dukie I liked.

Mateen Cleeves was hated outside of Lansing. That was a testament to how good he was in college.

  13. 4cornersfan - Mar 13, 2013 at 1:39 AM

Danny Ainge. I watched that granstanding whiner for 4 years at BYU and when he went to my then-favorite team, the Celtics, I became a Lakers fan.

  14. stanmrak - Mar 16, 2013 at 6:01 PM

Forget the players – the thing I hate most is the lack of any penalty for ‘intentional’ fouls; you know, the ones at the end of every close game that everyone knows are intentional, but don’t get called as intentional. You know there’s something wrong with the rule when every team that’s behind in the last minute commits intentional fouls, and the announcers even scream for an intentional foul to get the ball back. Of course, no referee will ever call an intentional foul, either. The penalty for that is TOO severe.

NO other sport has this problem.
