Couch fires reported after Michigan State’s loss to Duke

Michigan State fire

Michigan State’s season ended Friday night with a loss to Duke, and anger from some of East Lansing’s residents spurred police action in its wake. According to coverage from MLive.com that developed over the course of several hours, there were at least seven couch fires reported in East Lansing last night.

This was reportedly not the first time couch fires have been a problem for police after a Michigan State loss and certainly is not Michigan State-specific. In February, there were widespread accounts of burning furniture after the Spartans lost to Indiana. According to the report, such events go back to at least 1999.

According to WLNS, the damage was reasonably contained, with “relatively quiet” streets in East Lansing by about 1:15 a.m. ET. There were no reports of immediate injuries or arrests in published reports from MLive.com or WLNS.

Michigan State lost to Duke, 71-61, in Indianapolis and the Spartans finish their season with an overall record of 27-9.
