Eli Carter gets his release from Rutgers, fifth player to leave

Apr 19, 2013, 6:09 PM EDT

Eli Carter asked for his release from Rutgers and on Friday evening he seemed to have received it. The sophomore guard tweeted from his Twitter account that he did in fact get his release.

Carter is now the fifth player to leave the program following the Mike Rice scandal. Malick Kone and Vincent Garrett began the exodus followed by sophomore  Jerome Seagears and junior Mike Poole. JUCO small forward Chris Griffin (Wabash Valley College) and point guard Shane Rector (South Kent, Bronx, N.Y.) both decided to decommit from Rutgers, though the Scarlet Knights are still in the mix.

Eddie Jordan still has Myles Mack, though the New Jersey native may be thinking otherwise as well, according to Brendan Prunty of The Star-Ledger

“I think what’s going to happen is, no one wants to be the last one standing,” Mack’s high school coach Bob Hurley told NJ.com. “Then, you face a situation where it becomes, ‘I have to play in the Big Ten (in 2014) and who else is on the team?'”

Carter was the team’s leading scorer in both of his seasons in Piscataway. He scored 13.8 points per game in his first year and upped it to 14.9 a game in 2012-2013.

Rutgers is set to join the Big Ten in 2014.
