Former Wake Forest guard Chase Fischer transferring to BYU

Former Wake Forest guard Chase Fischer has found a new home, as the sophomore and West Virginia-native announced on Friday that he has committed to play for BYU and head coach Dave Rice according to a report from KSL.

Fischer was a captain for the Demon Deacons this past season, but saw his minutes decline dramtically from his freshman year. The 6-3 guard averaged 4.5 points per game during the 2012-13 season and will sit out the 2013-14 season per NCAA transfer rules. Fischer will have two seasons of eligibility remaining for BYU.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise — even to Fischer himself — as Provo, Utah is across the country from Fischer’s east coast roots. But it was the persistence of former Wake Forest assistant and current BYU assistant Mark Pope that helped pave the way for Fischer’s commitment.

“Coach Pope called me after the Final Four,” Fischer said. “It was kind of out of the blue for me. I hadn’t talked to Coach Pope in a while and it was a Utah (phone) number, and I was kind of shocked when he called me. And It just kind of went from there.”

Although Fischer’s minutes declined by nearly 12 a game from his freshman to sophomore season, he did shoot 42% from the three-point line in 2012-13 and should give BYU another weapon on the perimeter when he is eligible in 2014-15.
