Former Georgia Tech guard Brandon Reed returning to Arkansas State

After averaging 15.1 points and 3.4 assists per game and winning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors, guard Brandon Reed made the decision to leave Arkansas State and transfer to Georgia Tech.

At the time head coach John Brady spoke out against Reed’s request to be released from his scholarship. But after three years in Atlanta, Reed has decided to return to Jonesboro as a graduate student, using his final season of eligibility at the school where his career began.

“We are excited about Brandon rejoining our program and enrolling in our master’s degree program,” said Brady in a statement released by the school.

“He brings leadership, experience, and an ability to score the basketball. His family and I have visited in depth about this move and we all believe it will benefit all involved.”

Playing time and scoring opportunities likely played a role in Reed’s decision to leave Georgia Tech, and those are unlikely to be issues at Arkansas State next season.

In two years at Georgia Tech, Reed attempted a total of 385 shots (34.8% FG). In his lone season at Arkansas State the 6-4 guard attempted 428 shots, shooting 39% from the field.

With two of their top three scorers from this past season’s 19-win team out of eligibility (guard Trey Finn and forward Brandon Peterson), the Red Wolves can use another scorer alongside point guard Ed Townsel.

Brady’s hope is that Reed can turn back the clock in a sense, regaining the form that resulted in a successful freshman campaign at Arkansas State.
