Transfers happen. If you’ve kept up with college basketball over the last five seasons, you know they happen a lot.

Most schools just send out a release announcing the addition or defection of a player into or out of their program, maybe wish them well, normally don’t reveal the specifics of why they left, and are done with it.

Well, as you’ve figured out in recent months, Florida Gulf Coast is not most schools. Thanks to my former colleague Troy Machir, the Eagles became their own hashtag (#DunkCity for life!) and captured the nation with a run that has never been seen before, becoming the first 15 seed to ever advance to the Sweet 16.

Well, despite the innovator of Dunk City, Andy Enfield, leaving for the head coaching position at USC, new coach Joe Dooley has kind of furthered the unique brand of FGCU basketball.

He announced the signing of Julian DeBose on YouTube.

It’s nothing spectacular. Just a 28-second clip of comments on the former Rice standout, who averaged 10.4 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Owls, who were an abysmal 5-26 last season, 1-15 in Conference USA. But still, a small school that is trying to cash in on recent exposure does things like this to keep up with the times. Kudos.

Of course, I could be wrong in assuming this doesn’t happen often, if ever. If it does, please, someone, let me know. I just have never seen a school revert to a form of alternative media to announce transfers.

The Washington D.C. native will sit out the 2013-14 season and have two years of eligibility remaining.
