After spending one season at SMU, 7-foot center Jordan Dickerson has decided to transfer to Penn State as reported by Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com.

Dickerson, who hails from Brooklyn, N.Y., averaged just 3.5 minutes per game at SMU last season and an increase in minutes was unlikely in 2013-14.

As a result Dickerson chose to leave, as did 6-10 big man Blaise Mbargorba who chose Boston University earlier this week.

Dickerson said that SMU coach Larry Brown suggested that both he and Mbargorba — who missed last season with a shoulder injury — find new homes.

“They told us what the deal was,” Dickerson said. “They told us it might be better if we were to transfer ourselves rather than stay and be on the bench.”

While Dickerson won’t be able to play this season due to NCAA transfer rules, the season on the sidelines could turn out to be beneficial to both Dickerson and his new teammates.

Dickerson will be able to further develop his skills under head coach Patrick Chambers and his staff, and a Penn State team whose tallest player is 6-10 incoming freshman Julian Moore will have another big to work against in practice.

According to Zagoria’s story, Dickerson also considered schools such as Hofstra and Minnesota before deciding on Penn State. And if the talented Dickerson takes advantage of his transfer year, he and sophomore forward Brandon Taylor can be a solid front court tandem come 2014-15.
