Just over a month after making the decision to leave Baylor, 6-4 guard L.J. Rose has picked a new school. As first reported by Jason King of ESPN.com, the Houston native will transfer to the University of Houston.

Rose, a highly-touted perimeter prospect at the time of his arrival on campus, played an average of just 7.6 minutes per contest in 2012-13. With the presence of experienced guards such as Pierre Jackson, Brady Heslip and A.J. Walton playing time was scarce, and as a result Rose averaged just 0.9 points and 1.2 assists per game.

Rose will have three years of eligibility remaining, and according to King’s report Rose will seek a waiver to play immediately due to his mother’s health. If the waiver request is denied Rose will have to sit out the 2013-14 season.

Regardless of the outcome of the waiver request, with Houston due to lose both Brandon Morris and Tione Womack at the point guard position after this season the addition of Rose will help the Cougars on the perimeter.

Head coach James Dickey also has point guard Jaaron Simmons joining the program this summer, along with forwards Ahmed Hamdy and Danrad “Chicken” Knowles. Knowles was originally a 2012 signee but failed to qualify academically.

L.J. should already be familiar with his new surroundings, as his father Lynden played for Houston during the “Phi Slama Jamma” era of the early 1980’s. The Houston faithful is hopeful that coach Dickey and his staff can push the program in the right direction as the school begins play in the American Athletic Conference this fall.

Houston did manage to win 20 games last season, but the Cougars finished 7-9 in Conference USA play and its’ strength of schedule ranked 302nd nationally according to realtimerpi.com. Houston also lost leading scorer Joseph Young, but the good news is that both Danuel House (12.4 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and TaShawn Thomas (16.9, 9.8) return.
